Belgian Tervuren - Richard & Tamera Lewis

Achates

ACHATES ESPRIT DE JOIE

BORN NOVEMBER 1975 / DIED NOVEMBER 1988

Achates was my first Belgian Tervuren. I paid a "pet" price for him of $150 because one of his ears had not come up. The ear came up a week after I brought him home. Three years later, a competing professional handler offered me $3,000 for him while we were in the ring. Achates was not for sale.

His call name was "Bock." He stood 24 inches at the withers and weighed about 60 pounds. He had good substance. He had many fine structural features including parallel head planes, an excellent front and rear. He had a great show attitude. He was Kennel Review's Number One Belgian Tervuren for 1979.

He could have done a lot more in obedience, but my career as a stock broker cut that short. At about the age of 6, he was bred to Debonair Debra de Vedette Noir, owned by Steve Sorenson. This breeding produced Corsairs Beaujangles who in turn sired Fox Hollow's Lothlorien. In that sense, Bock had a great influence on the breed. He was the Veteran Dog class winner at the national under Mrs. Hoddesson, who then gave Breed to Beau and Best Opposite Sex to Foxhollow's Lothlorien (Lester).

Bock's influence on the breed may still have another chapter. As of September, 2008, there were still two breeding units left at Canine Cryobank in California. These were collected in 1984. As a precaution, I had a straw thawed in September and the results were a "fabulous" 65-70% recoverable assessment. The original motility when collected was a whopping 90%. As of April 24, 2009, Achates' semen was scheduled to be surgically implanted in Jamaica Pell Mell the morning of April 25th.
